What Journey Into Manhood IS

Journey Into Manhood is a 48-hour immersion in intensive emotional-healing work, designed specifically for men who are serious about resolving unwanted homosexual attractions.

As a “journeyer,” you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of group and individual exercises – including journaling, visualization, group sharing, safe healing touch and intensive emotional-release work – all in a very supportive yet challenging environment.

Journey Into Manhood is an experiential-learning weekend. We limit the use of classroom-style lectures.  Instead, we create opportunities for you to experience healing, not just learn about it.

One simple example: You won’t just talk about what it is like to look another man in the eyes – you’ll stand eye to eye with another man while we help you process whatever feelings might arise.

All of the exercises are designed to help you identify and process the underlying issues that may be alienating you from your authentic heterosexual masculinity – and, ideally, to help you experience a deep emotional breakthrough.

What Journey Into Manhood is NOT

Journey Into Manhood is not a religious retreat, although many men find it spiritually rewarding. Men of all faiths (or no faith) are welcome. We do teach the principle of “surrender” to a Higher Power or Greater Good. But we do not advocate a specific faith, nor will we intentionally challenge your religious beliefs.

Journey Into Manhood is not professional therapy.

It is not a gay-bashing weekend.

It is not a place to meet potential sex partners.

It is not a place for shaming. Quite the contrary: we affirm your inherent value as a man, just as you are.

Journey Into Manhood is not appropriate for anyone who feels pressured to change against his will.  It is only for men who already are sincerely self-motivated to resolve unwanted same-sex attractions, in accordance with their intrinsic values, beliefs and personal life goals.

About the Staff

Journey Into Manhood is staffed by about 20 men who volunteer their time because they care deeply about supporting men’s healing and personal growth.

Most of the staff have overcome a past homosexual struggle themselves. Some are men who have always been heterosexual but have significant experience mentoring SSA men or facilitating men’s emotional healing work generally.

Staff members either are not professional therapists or are not serving in that professional capacity in the course of the weekend.

About the Participants

All are men at least 18 years old who are actively working to overcome unwanted same sex attraction. The maximum number of participants per event is 32.

Since the first Journey Into Manhood in January 2002, more than 1000 men from a dozen countries and 40 states have been through the program.

Typically, they range in age from their early 20s to late 40s, but men in their late teens to their 50s and 60s also participate.

Usually, more than a third are married (often with children) and working to keep their marriages intact.  Most (but not all) attendees are religious. Most are Christians (of every denominational variety), Jews and occasionally Muslims.

Most have struggled relatively secretly with unwanted same sex attractions over a period of years. Some have been sexually active, but others have not. A minority were openly gay before opting to leave a gay lifestyle.

Cost and Accommodations

The cost is US$650.

People Can Change, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit in the U.S., raises funds for partial sponsorships or other financial assistance for men who are highly committed to the change process but unable to afford the full fee.

JIM is held at retreat centers or group camps with temperature-controlled rooms that usually bunk at least six men to a room (no one- or two-man rooms). Nourishing hot meals are provided. We help arrange carpooling to and from the site.

Apply for a Sponsorship

People Can Change raises donations to pay for financial assistance for men who are highly committed to the change process but unable to afford the full fee.

Two types of financial assistance are available – sponsorships (or grants), and a pre-approved payment plan.  Sponsorships are at least US$100 and at most US$400.  Alternatively, you might be approved for a payment plan instead of – or in addition to – a partial sponsorship.  For details, see FAQs About Sponsorship and Payment Plans.

To apply for either a sponsorship or payment plan, you will need to fill out an online application AND make an initial REFUNDABLE deposit of US$250.  To do so, go to Payments and click on the “financial assistance” link under the weekend you want to attend.

If you do NOT receive the financial assistance you need, and you therefore need to withdraw your registration, your deposit can be fully refunded to you, on request.

Sponsorship applications must be received by PCC 4 weeks before the weekend you hope to attend. Our intention is to advise you of our sponsorship decisions 3 weeks in advance.  We will also consider applications received less than 4 weeks in advance, but all funds available for that weekend may already have been distributed.

Donate to the Sponsorship Fund

Your tax-deductible donation to People Can Change (registered in the U.S. as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) enables men to experience the Journey Into Manhood weekend – a life-changing turning point for many – who otherwise would not have the resources to participate.

Donations are increasingly necessary to meet the growing need for Journey Into Manhood events as word of mouth about the success of our program spreads, and as we expand to meet the growing need.  In 2007, for example, we presented Journey Into Manhood in England – our first time outside the U.S.  We are also taking the program to new parts of the United States, such as Florida and Texas.

Fees and donations cover such expenses as:

·         Renting group camps or retreat centers with large meeting rooms
·         Providing meals and accommodations for up to 32 “journeyers” and 20 or more volunteer staff
·         Airline tickets to fly in certain volunteer staff
·         Purchasing and shipping necessary materials
·         Administration

Our goal is to have at least US$2,000 in sponsorship funds available for every training, to partially fund at least 5 participants per training.
